Types of Lenses

Soft Contact Lenses

Soft contact lenses are made of flexible, oxygen-permeable materials that contour naturally to the shape of the eye, providing comfortable, all-day wear. They are available in a variety of designs, including daily, bi-weekly, and monthly replacement options, as well as specialty versions for astigmatism (toric) and presbyopia (multifocal). Their high moisture content and soft texture make them an excellent choice for first-time wearers and those seeking a comfortable, low-maintenance vision correction option.

Who benefits most from Soft Contact Lenses:

  • Active lifestyles – Great for sports and daily activities, offering freedom from glasses.
  • Mild to moderate prescriptions – Provides clear, stable vision for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
  • Comfort seekers – Ideal for patients who experience dryness or discomfort with rigid lenses.
  • Occasional wearers – Daily disposable lenses are perfect for part-time or casual use with minimal care required.
  • Presbyopia (age-related reading difficulty) – Multifocal soft lenses offer seamless vision at all distances.

Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are larger in diameter than traditional contact lenses and rest on the white part of the eye (the sclera), vaulting completely over the cornea. This design creates a liquid reservoir between the lens and the eye, which smooths out corneal irregularities and provides continuous hydration. Patients often find scleral lenses more comfortable than other rigid lenses because the lens doesn’t touch the corneal surface.

Who benefits most from Scleral Lenses:

  • High prescriptions or complex prescriptions – When soft lenses or glasses cannot fully correct vision.
  • Keratoconus and irregular corneas – Provides stable, clear vision even in advanced cases.
  • Severe dry eye disease – The liquid reservoir acts as a protective barrier, offering relief to patients with conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome or ocular surface disease.
  • Post-surgical corneas – Beneficial for patients who have had corneal transplants, refractive surgery complications, or scarring.
  • Patients with lens intolerance – For those who have struggled with discomfort in traditional soft or RGP lenses.

Ortho-K

Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, uses custom-designed contact lenses that are worn overnight to gently reshape the front surface of the eye (the cornea). By morning, the lenses are removed, and most patients can see clearly throughout the day without needing glasses or contact lenses.

Who benefits most from Ortho-K:

  • Children and teens with myopia (nearsightedness): Ortho-K is one of the most effective options for myopia control, helping to slow down how quickly a child’s prescription increases.
  • Adults with active lifestyles: Ortho-K offers lens free days for adults.
  • Patients looking for flexibility: Since the effect is reversible, Ortho-K offers clear vision without permanent change, making it a safe option for a wide range of patients.

Specialty RGP Designs

Specialty RGP (Rigid Gas Permeable) lenses are smaller, firm lenses that rest directly on the cornea and deliver exceptionally crisp vision. Because they hold their shape, they correct vision more precisely than many soft lenses. These lenses can be customized into different designs, such as multifocal RGPs for patients who want both distance and near vision in one lens, KBA keratoconic designs for those with keratoconus or highly irregular corneas, and aspheric designs for enhanced optics and stability.

Who benefits from specialty RGP lenses:

  • Patients requiring the sharpest possible vision
  • Individuals with astigmatism or corneal irregularities
  • Those with presbyopia, who may benefit from multifocal options
  • Patients seeking a durable and long-lasting solution
